The Australian Silver Kangaroo is composed of One Troy Ounce of .999 Pure Silver and is backed and guaranteed by the Australian government. 999 SILVER,” the mint mark P and the coin’s size. The obverse has the image of Queen Elizabeth II of England, designed by British sculptor, Ian Rank Broadley. It is inscribed with the words “Australia, Elizabeth II - 1 Dollar.”
It is released with differing designs each year and is one of the most popular bullion coins issued by the Perth Mint. The 2013 edition has no proposed mintage cap, and will be produced until the end of 2013.
The Perth Mint was founded in 1899 after considerable amounts of gold were found in Australian deposits. The newly established mint created gold and silver sovereigns until Great Britain abandoned the gold standard in 1931. It remained under British control until 1971.
